The Dubai Water Canal was an $800m project to build a 3.2km waterway which winds its way around Downtown Dubai, home to the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa, and the world’s largest mall, Dubai Mall. The water way serves as a link between the Creek in Old Dubai and the Arabian Gulf, passing through Business Bay. Upon completion of the project, the Dubai Canal effectively turned a significant part of the emirate into an island, and now serves as a tourist and community destination in it's own right.
The construction of the Dubai Water Canal is an impressive undertaking which involves an infrastructure overhaul of one of the UAE’s busiest metropolitan areas.
The canal route cuts through the business centre of Dubai, flanked by several business, lifestyle and leisure developments, including hotels, restaurants and retail outlets. The project includes the redesign of Sheikh Zayed road, the UAE’s busiest artery linking all seven emirates, the construction of multiple pedestrian and traffic bridges, including a waterfall bridge, and a 6.4km water-front with running and cycling tracks.
The 3-year project was a major undertaking in one of the world’s fastest growing urban areas and involved complexities and inter-related dependencies rarely seen anywhere else in the world.
